Homer Hall was born in Salisbury North Carolina and learned the art of Southern Style Bar-Be-Quing, and smoking and curing foods from his Father and Grandfather, as I learned from him.
Homer Hall migrated to Baltimore, Maryland and married. As a deacon of his church, Homer Hall was very involved helping with food preparation and contributing his services and his Famous Bar-Be-Que ribs became part of the regular church menu. Homer Hall’s ribs became very popular because they are some of the best RIBS ever. Folks started coming to his house to purchase his Famous Bar-Be-Que Ribs and Minced Bar-Be-Que along with his homemade Bar-Be-Que Sauce.
Homer Hall was also in the trucking business as an independent trucker, and would take his ribs to work and sell ribs sandwiches from his truck. The Dixie Pig Bar-Be-Que grew so that Homer Hall found himself having to open a small business out of his house and constructed a barbeque pit in the backyard, hence the founding of the Dixie Pig Bar-Be-Que somewhere in 1946. This is when and where Homer Hall constructed his southern style brick and stone Bar-Be-Que pit that actually still stands today with his hand print.
The Dixie Pig Bar-Be-Que became very popular through the late 60’s to the early 80’s. The Original Dixie Pig Bar-Be-Que had visitors such as Lawanda Page (Esther) from the Fred Sanford Show, Millie Jackson, Stan Stovall, channel 11 news in Baltimore, Walter Cronkite, Oprah Winfrey while she was in Baltimore with Richard Sher from a Baltimore news channel, Johnny Unitas, and many more.
Homer Hall was very popular and loved by all and would give the shirt off his back. The Dixie Pig Original Location at 7621 Amos Avenue Severn Maryland moved to it first new store front location in 1982 in Fort George Meade Maryland through 1995.
